When Bed Bugs Bite

Friday, February 17th, 2012 by Brandon Runyon

Part 3 in Bed Bug Series

After a restless night of sleeping, you wake up itching. Then you discover bug bites – most often small bites where the bed bugs have latched onto you during the night and sucked your blood. It’s not as painful as it sounds, but it is irritating the morning after.

Some people are more sensitive to bed bug bites than others and have more extreme reactions. The good news is we don’t have scientific evidence that bed bugs transmit diseases.  There are several home remedies that can reduce the irritation of bed bug bites. Ask your doctor for medical advice. Some popular treatments include:

  • Wash the area with the bites with soap and water.
  • Mix a paste of baking soda and water and put it temporarily on the irritated area.
  • Try an astringent to lower the need to each – such as witch hazel or lemon juice.
  • Put aloe on the impacted area.
  • Try a cortisone cream or calamine lotion on the impacted area.
  • Take ibuprofen or naproxen for pain or discomfort.
  • Take benadryl for those who have stronger reactions

The smartest long term relief from bed bugs it to hire a professional pest control company like Swat Pest to remove the bed bugs from your home. Swat Pest services homes in Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky.
